Back in the distant past (well it seems distant) a group of people, mainly retired, wandered aimlessly round 18 holes at Sheerness Golf Club. At that time there were several members who had either taken early retirement or had been made redundant. This was in 1990 and one day over a cup of coffee (well mine was a cup of coffee) Norman Gregor suggested we ought to get our act together and play a few organised competitions. So from that day on Norman became our first Captain and we went ahead with our cunning plan. What to call us? There were the Cock Pheasants at Faversham, The Old Salts at Whitstable, The CD's (Coffin Dodgers) further up the line etc.

Because of the Islands association with sheep (Sheppey) it was decided to call our little gathering The Rams. At some time, after one or two of the Ladies Section for some reason objected to this, it was decided that we could be Rapidly Ageing MaleS. This kept the ladies quiet, but I prefer the original definition.

Obviously we never had the numbers in those days but we must remember that it was Norman who set us on the road to our success today. Unfortunately Norman passed away recently but it's him we must thank.

An early Allberry Shield (1992) had these members taking part. Alan Allberry, Dennis Arnold, Gerry Beck, Reg Egerton, George Fryer, Ron Gillham, Bob Gilmour, Norman Gregor, Bob Hamblett, Frank Hayward, Les Holmes, Sandy McPhee, Brian Mitchell, Tim Phipps, Basil Rice, Gordon Tilden, John Walker, Bill Watson, Bob Whitaker, Stan Wilkinson, Vic Willis, Jack Wingrove and Bryn White. A grand total of 23. (We have had as many as 75 take part.)

The winner that year by the way was Brian Mitchell.

I feel sure that the spirit of the Rams will continue for a long time. Keep up your support!
